Position Summary
This position is responsible for the coordination of services that pertain to immediate, short-term, major student crises, disturbances and emergencies. This position oversees critical offices that help, support, and educate the UMN community and its system campuses. From the  programs, services, and activities to assist student parents in achieving academic, personal, and professional success to providing sexual assault and relationship violence intervention and support as well as the proper enforcement of the student code of conduct, this AVP/Dean of Students and their team are tasked with helping students when assistance and empathy are most needed. The AVP/Dean of Students is an active member for the University Behavior Consultation Team, Bias Response and Referral Network, and other university faculty or staff committees as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:
Provide leadership and administrative management for the Advocacy and Support area of Student Affairs.
Reach out to students who have been victims of serious crimes or accidents, hospitalized for mental health issues, or experienced other unexpected events which can impact their student success
Coordinate University response to student deaths
Point person for emergency/crisis management; Responds to and assists with student crises or emergencies
Liaison to UMPD on safety issues
With staff from the Office for Community Standards, actively promote student responsibility and encourage honesty, integrity, and respect among UMN students through presentations, publications, education, compliance with community standards of behavior, and support of individual and group rights
Implement the Parental Notification Policy by meeting with students who have been hospitalized due to excessive alcohol use and determining when to contact parents
Assist in the development of area annual budgets, monitor spending throughout the year, and approve transfers of funds and needed from various discretionary accounts
Supervise and evaluate the work of direct reports; supervise employee hiring and training.
Serve as a member of the Office for Student Affairs Leadership Team; serve on OSA and University committees/workgroups as needed; serve as consultant and liaison to University departments
Supports and advises the President's Initiative on Student Mental Health (PRISMH), Boynton Health and Student Counseling Services regarding mental health and wellness needs of our students.
Respond to problems and concerns of various stakeholders including students, staff, faculty, and parents
Create, oversee and manage the OSA On-Call Rotation Process (including training and debriefing of staff)
Review, amend and develop university policies that relate to student conduct, advocacy and support.

Direct Unit Reports:
Includes Office for Community Standards, CARE program, Student Parent Help Center, Student Conflict Resolution Center, the Aurora Center for Advocacy and Education and Student Advocate Services.

Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, Psychology or related fields.
Significant leadership experience in a college or university setting with a focus on student advocacy and support programs.
Experience working with diverse populations (including students and department staff) and a demonstrated active commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging.
Experience in crisis intervention and response, student conduct and conflict resolution engaging students, faculty, staff, and families.
Strategic, collaborative leader with the ability to infuse emerging trends and best practices into a complex unit of offices, programs, services, and initiatives to meet the students’ needs.
Demonstrated supervisory experience.
Possess an analytical mindset embracing the use of data to make informed decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership, Counseling, Psychology or related fields.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Must have a proven track record of experience and knowledge about crisis management and emergency preparedness in higher education and strong leadership skills; Experience working  with conflict resolution, emotional support and advocacy; Strong knowledge of and experience with student conduct policies and complex cases involving individual students and student groups; Demonstrated ability working with underrepresented students, as well as graduate and professional students. Proficiency with computer and common business software required. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) required; Requires motivated individual who will take initiative to solve problems, assume responsibility, and meet deadlines; Must be creative, thorough, and professional; Must be able to handle interruptions, balance multiple and varied tasks, and handle confidential information with discretion; Excellent time management skills required; Ability to be flexible; Occasional evening and weekend work may be required; Demonstrated knowledge of student affairs and services in higher education.
