Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently seeking two Laboratory Assistants to join the Department of Geology and Geophysics for 40 hours per week starting as soon as possible, working through September 4, 2021. These are temporary, casual, non-exempt positions eligible for casual benefits.
The Lab Assistants will assist in curating the rock collections, and will also include labelling, sorting, imaging, inventorying, basic description of samples, unshelving samples from the collections, and reshelving. Some rock cutting and preparation of samples for imaging will be required. Supervision will be provided by Senior Scientist Henry Dick, and Senior Research Assistant Ellen Roosen.

The internal working title(s) for these positions could be either Laboratory Assistant I or Laboratory Assistant II. The final level of the position will be determined commensurate with the selected candidate's level of education & experience.
Unshelving rock and shelving rock samples from storage and transporting them to and from the laboratory where they will be processed.
Preparing rock samples for imaging, including sawing the rocks to produce suitable for imaging.
Basic description of rock samples, including documenting physical state, grain size and texture, weight, and dimensions
Attend seminars "of interest" in the Dept. of Marine Geology and Geophysics as determined by their senior supervisor
Other tasks deemed necessary by supervisor
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent is required
Strong attention to detail is rqeuired
Good verbal and written skills is required
Basic familiarity with computers; preferably experience with Excel or the ability to learn quickly
Lab Assistant I Level
High School Diploma or equivalent
Lab Assistant II Level
High School Diploma with some relevant lab experience
Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to occasional/prolonged standing/walking, repetitive motion (using the computer & general office equipment), and use of hands for basic grasping and basic/fine manipulation and lifting of up to 50 pounds multiple times a day will be required. Good physical coordination and condition is required as the postion requires heavy labor. Visual requirements to include depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors. Communication requirements include ability to hear and talk to others, on the phone and in-person; working around and with others. This position may be exposed to laboratory chemicals and solvents. Physical duties are subject to change.
