Applications are invited for a McKnight Foundation sponsored postdoctoral associate (job code 9546) in the Civil Engineering Department in the Swenson College of Science and Engineering (SCSE) at University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). The initial appointment will be for one year with further appointments contingent on performance and availability of funding. This is a 12-month teaching and research position beginning July 1, 2021 or later with teaching duties (2 courses annually) in the Civil engineering department or other departments depending on candidate qualifications and need. The remainder of the time will be engaged in research, with Dr. David Saftner, focusing on the impact on instructor teaching methods on student learning.
The post-doctoral associate will join a national research team focusing on the impact on teaching methods of instructor attitudes on student learning styles. Addition research opportunities include an on-going project investigating the effectiveness of academic leadership training and the impact of pandemic-related teaching changes on student learning, especially in courses with laboratory and field components. Additionally, the McKnight post-doctoral associate will teach one course per semester in the Department of Civil Engineering. The specific course will depend on the individual’s expertise and consultation with the Department Head.
Teaching (50%): Teach two courses annually in the Department of Civil Engineering or other departments depending on qualifications. Develop course content as needed.
Research (50%): Participate in on-going research projects on the impact of teaching methods on student learning. Investigating the effectiveness of academic leadership training and the impact of pandemic-related teaching changes on student learning, especially in courses with laboratory and field components. Co-author and present research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Co-author grant proposals to internal and external agencies. Participate in collaborative meetings with internal and external faculty members. Supervise undergraduate and Master’s students.
A completed Ph.D. in civil engineering, environmental engineering, engineering education, or closely related topic
Ability to teach concepts of civil or environmental engineering to students
Experience in engineering education research
Experience teaching students in civil or environmental engineering
Strong engineering education publication record
Industrial or academic experience in civil or environmental engineering
