Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Duties/Responsibilities This is a Civil Service position responsible for the care of a variety of laboratory animals in accordance with applicable safety, sanitation, and research requirements, and the supervision of personnel, facilities, and equipment needed to carry out these work requirements.
Ongoing tasks may include the following:
(30%) Employee supervision. Has authority to perform or to effectively recommend the following actions: hire, transfer, suspend, promote, discharge, assign work, reward, manage performance, direct the work of other employees, address grievances, and create and maintain the records pertaining to these activities.
(30%) Equipment and Facilities. Supervises and performs the tasks of ordering, maintaining, and making minor repairs on equipment and facilities. Performs other duties as assigned, and could be assigned to be a part of the on-call team.
(15%) Animal Care. Supervises and participates in cleaning, disinfecting, feeding and care of mice, rats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other laboratory animals, and trains employees in these tasks.
(10%) Procedures and Protocols. Writes, reviews, and edits Standard Operating Procedures. Coordinates and monitors the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures in animal facilities.
(10%) Provide Information. Responds to written and oral requests for information from investigators and RAR staff.
(5%) Teamwork. Supports and backs up other RAR area supervisors as needed to provide additional supervisory presence, which may require driving to another area of the University. Works with laboratory animals – cleaning, feeding, monitoring.
Some work assignments will involve exposure to animal allergens, high levels of noise, and/or disinfectants and sanitizing agents. To protect employees, the University of Minnesota will ask that you wear personal protective equipment, some of which may require medical monitoring and fit testing. All required protective equipment, testing, and medical evaluations will be provided by the University.
All offers of employment for this position will be conditioned on the completion of a medical questionnaire, evidence of current tetanus immunization, and/or a fitness for duty examination to ensure the applicant's ability to work in an environment that may present occupational health and safety hazards associated with the work.
Required Qualifications: (must be documented) • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years related lab animal experience, or combination of related education and work experience to equal at least 6 years
Preferred Qualifications: • ALAT or higher certification through AALAS • Supervisory experience in lab animal industry • Hands-on experience working with multiple lab animal species • Understanding of cagewash and vivarium sanitation operations
Selection Criteria: • Supervisory experience – hire new employees, and manage employee performance. • Demonstrated ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions in English. Able to read detailed laboratory instructions in English to complete work. Demonstrated writing skills. Good computer skills. • Good conflict management skills. • Good organization and planning skills. • Valid driver’s license. • Must be able to lift/push up to 50 lbs of equipment and sanitizing agents.
