The General Mechanic position is responsible for routine maintenance, repair and inspection of building systems and components, and assists in the non-routine maintenance and repair of various types of equipment such as pumps, motors, locks, air compressors and chillers. This position acts as a lead worker over student Utility Workers. This position reports directly to Facility Operations Supervisor in the assigned facility.
Responsibilities: Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Routine Preventive Maintenance (45%): Performs routine preventive maintenance and follows established programs in University Residence Halls, Faculty Housing and on equipment. Inspects and lubricates fans, motors and other equipment. Replaces belts, bearings and motor brushes. Inspects steam, water sewer, ventilation systems and reports deficiencies. Operates building mechanical equipment; starts and stops equipment such as air handling equipment. Reads meters, charts temperature and pressures readings on equipment logs.
Repair (40%): Monitors and responds to alarms. Cleans traps and drains; repairs furniture, custodial and snow removal equipment, door locks and hardware. Performs periodic repairs to equipment, appliances and furnishings. Changes light bulbs and cleans lighting fixtures, which can be reached by a 12 ft. stepladder.
Loading, Unloading supplies and Moving Furniture (5%): Stocks supplies, tools and equipment. Moves and assembles furniture, office equipment, tables, benches, chairs and various kinds of heavy equipment as necessary.
Grounds Maintenance & Snow Removal (5%): Performs limited grounds keeping work to include raking and sweeping of sidewalks, docks, loading zones and trash holding areas. Removes snow and debris from sidewalks and stairs by sweeping, shoveling and use of powered snow removal equipment as required.
Other: (5%) Reports deficiencies in building systems and components to supervisor as appropriate. Maintains a clean and organized shop and monitors and cleans building mechanical areas.
Work Environment: Work is performed mainly within the building but some outside work is required.
Starting Hourly Rate: $17.46
The General Mechanic position is responsible for providing services that relate directly to the health, safety and welfare of residents and maintaining equipment and infrastructure. Functions include routine maintenance, emergent maintenance, student employee supervision, daily customer interaction, collaboration with contracted service providers, and safety inspections. This position acts as lead worker for student utility workers. This position is for 1st shift, Monday - Friday. 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM
Minimum Qualifications: (Knowledge, skills and abilities)
Ability to read, write and comprehend English and follow work orders, plans and drawings. Vocational education in Mechanical Maintenance totaling one year and one-year experience, including the use of associated power tools, in general mechanical work to total two years. Documented professional experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and meet the other physical requirements of the position. This position must pass a criminal background check.
