The Public Safety Officer is responsible for providing a high level of customer service as well as a safe and secure campus environment. All duties will be carried out in accordance with local, state and federal laws, as well as college policies. The Public Safety Officer must be sensitive to college needs, employee and student goodwill, and overall brand equity of MCAD as an employer and educational institution.
Performs all duties with customer service in mind, as it relates to students, staff, faculty, and MCAD guests. Builds and maintains professional relationships with MCAD community members, including students, staff, faculty, guests, prospective students, etc.
Communicates directly with customers either by telephone, electronically or face to face; responding promptly to customer inquiries; handle and resolve customer complaints, etc.
Respond to emergencies by assessing the situation, employing tact, diplomacy, respect, and individual judgment to remedy and/or maintain control and calm.
Proactively engage with members of the MCAD community, with respect and awareness of the diversity of background, experience, and thought that exists within the community.
Proactively familiarizes self with campus, college policies, department policies, and local, state and federal laws for the purpose of:
Protecting life and property.
Responding to and handling any disturbances and violations of local, state and federal laws and college policies.
Apprehending those engaged in activities of criminal or disturbing nature.
Noting and reporting suspicious people.
Assisting the community and public whenever possible.
Patrol the college buildings and property surrounding the campus, remaining alert for all accidents, incidents and irregularities, and reporting all such conditions.
Operate telephone, including the switchboard and emergency lines.
Monitor Public Safety systems, responding and escalating as needed, including but not limited to:
Fire control systems and alarms
Surveillance cameras located throughout the campus.
Radio traffic, including other departments and the police when applicable.
Burglar alarm system
Prepare necessary reports relating to all incidents encountered on applicable forms in a precise manner acceptable for outside distribution, including maintaining incident report information and keeping logs and files up-to-date.
Provide information services to all walk-up traffic and telephone calls.
Keep the dispatch, office areas, and MCAD vehicles secure at all times, prohibiting unauthorized persons from accessing. Maintain office and vehicle cleanliness.
Record and secure all lost and found items, and follow Public Safety procedures for returning the property to the owner.
Enforce parking rules and regulations.
This position is considered essential personnel and must be available outside of normal working hours when needed to support the college operations including, but not limited to, events, emergency situations and coverage for absences. Vacations are normally limited during those times.
Available to work after hours and/or on weekends in emergency situations, including but not limited to:
Severe weather conditions
Threats of violence
Available to work additional hours around key campus event periods. Black out periods for paid time off benefits may apply to these periods. Events include but are not limited to:
Campus move in
Move out dates
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Safety or Public Safety Supervisor.
Represents MCAD’s vision, purpose, and values in day to day work and interactions with MCAD students, staff, faculty, and campus guests, as well as the greater community.
High School diploma, or equivalent, required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, preferred.
Training in de-escalation, self-defense, security and/or police training preferred.
General security experience, particularly in a college environment, preferred.
General customer service experience, strongly preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word) or equivalent software, experience required.
Demonstrated understanding of law enforcement and the key issues that impact a security officer.
Demonstrated aptitude in written and oral communication and customer service skills, as well as interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize when dealing with multiple high-priority situations.
Strong problem solving skills and technical aptitude.
Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication and collaborate across departments.
First Aid and CPR Certification, strongly preferred.
This position has been identified as security sensitive, and as such will require a background check. At the discretion of the college, various background checks may be done during the course of employment. Must possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license, good record; satisfactory Motor Vehicle DMV Check required. Must pass the Kari Koskinen Manager Background Check.
This position operates predominantly on MCAD's campus grounds, using both internal and external facilities, with occasional exposure to weather conditions such as rain, snow, etc. This position requires the ability and willingness to closely partner with team members and colleagues in other departments. This role will at times use standard office equipment such as computers and phones, and depending on the role may require the use of various tools or machinery.
