The Internal Communications unit is responsible for developing and delivering a broad range of communications (print and digital) for UC's more than 225,000 employees and 60,000 retirees. In addition to systemwide communications, the unit is also responsible for internal communications for the UC Office of the President community.
The Internal Communications group within the UC Office of the President (UCOP) in downtown Oakland, California is looking for a seasoned, energetic and versatile communications professional to join its team as a Communications Strategist supporting UC's Systemwide Human Resources division. Reporting to the director of Internal Communications, the Communications Strategist acts as chief writer, strategist and communications resource for various Human Resources initiatives and needs, including large organizational changes, new employee/retiree benefits information systems and process changes, crisis communications and ongoing labor relations and collective bargaining activities.
Our ideal candidate has demonstrated skill in conceiving and implementing creative and effective communication strategies for complex and sensitive subjects; can produce quality work quickly; has superior writing, editing and interpersonal skills; brings a strategic and creative approach to communicating across traditional and digital platforms; is skilled in turning sometimes dry information into engaging content; and is keenly interested in creating communications that educate and help foster strong internal relationships.
We're looking for someone who is naturally upbeat and collaborative, can perform with poise under tight deadlines and shifting priorities, and brings a positive, solution-oriented approach to their work. The ability to successfully navigate a complex organization and interact with a wide variety of people with diplomacy and tact is also important. This position requires a mature and seasoned communications professional with excellent editorial, strategic and political judgment, and strong interpersonal skills.
Key responsibilities include proactively planning, writing and implementing print and digital communications (announcements and informational updates, leadership messages, fact sheets, website content, newsletter articles, updates on labor contract negotiations, etc.) for employees, retirees, and internal stakeholder audiences. This position is also responsible for drafting talking points, presentations and other materials the vice president of Systemwide Human Resources may need for internal meetings.
Communications: Manages complex comprehensive communications programs for large, highly visible organizational functions. Produces a variety of communication pieces in a variety of venues including written, visual, digital, and electronic communications. Ensures production of high-quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints.
Planning and strategy: Works with departmental or division administration to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans. Provides advice and counsel to departmental administration on all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, effective messaging, and problem resolution. Works with management to position the department strategically with the organization's clients.
Collaborates with other UCOP communications colleagues to ensure message consistency across internal/external channels;
Proactively keeps the Internal Communications Director, and other UCOP communications colleagues as appropriate, informed about emerging and/or ongoing organizational issues, especially those that may adversely impact UC's reputation;
Plans, develops and implements short- and long-term communications strategies that inform and educate audiences, using a range of audience-appropriate media including print, web, and other technologies;
Produces quality content that is well written, accurate, engaging, audience-appropriate, strategically delivered, meets deadlines and conforms to UCOP style guidelines;
Ensures all proper reviews are conducted and that appropriate comments are incorporated;
Works proactively with HR and UCOP communications colleagues to anticipate issues/opportunities and associated communications.
Graduation from college with a major in journalism, public relations, marketing communications, or allied field, and at least eight years of professional writing experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short term strategic communication plans.
Advanced skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills. Highly attuned cultural sensitivities.
Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management, and problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills. Ability to assess and synthesize information and recommendations from a variety of sources in order to develop strategically appropriate communications.
Demonstrated ability to develop effective communications for a variety of audiences.
Ability to write clear, lively, engaging, and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences, while ensuring adherence to the university messages; careful and thoughtful editorial skills. Ability to conveypolicy decisions and recommendations in clear and compelling prose.
Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation; thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision to accomplish high-profile tasks and to meet multiple concurrent deadlines.
Superior interpersonal communication, teamwork, collaboration and client service skills, with demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships. Ability to be calm and focused under pressure, and counsel and persuade others.
Verbal and presentation skills that demonstrate the ability to articulate ideas and issues clearly, concisely, and persuasively, and facilitate teams to achieve goals.
Strong professional judgment, with proven ability to be a creative, strategic and critical thinker, and a proactive problem-solver in an environment undergoing significant change.
Ability to support and work with organizational leaders.
Proven initiative to follow through and complete assignments independently and by established deadlines, and work cooperatively and productively within a team environment.
Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office, web-based applications, and in-house publishing systems. Familiarity with commonly used platforms and software, such as HTML, Adobe Creative Suite, and Mac OS environment.
Prior experience in developing organizational change and crisis communications, and communications regarding labor relations/collective bargaining activities.
Prior experience developing communications for a large, public sector or non-profit organization.
Prior experience devising communications for HR issues, systems and processes.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary:$110,000 - $120,000, DOE.
