As a member of the Commercial Operations and Guest Services team, this position is responsible for overseeing and managing the retail operations of the Gift and Garden Store, satellite and Applehouse at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum with a gross annual revenue of $1,200,000. Responsible for inventory management, employee and volunteer supervision, staffing and training, customer service, sales and revenue management, formulating advertising and marketing strategies with Public Relations & Communications, and collaborate with other Arboretum units. Ensuring maximum sales while maintaining low turnover. The net profit for the retail operations support the general Arboretum operations. This position will supervises a (1) sales floor lead, (2) temporary part-time retail merchandisers and (1) full time sales associate along with (10-17) temp and casual workers.
Inventory Management (55%) • Customer demands are met efficiently through sufficient product inventory • Manage and monitor stock inventory levels • Strategize, price negotiations and meet with vendors and consignors; local and out of state gift shows • Work with leadership team on strategic vision and planning for giftstore operations • Collaborate with stakeholders on combined merchandising and interpretation efforts • Generate purchase orders that are related to the Arboretum’s missions, events and programs • Directs the receiving of goods through Altru point of sale and evaluate price mark-ups and mark downs • Create and oversee the floor placement, displays and stocking of inventory • Be aware of emerging trends and discover unique locally designed items which includes Arboretum exclusive items • Maintain a wide selection of Arboretum branded logo apparel and gift items • Decide on pricing of merchandise; and ensure the store is profitable by increasing sales and keeping costs low • Works with vendors on inventory damages, returns and order fulfillment and invoice/credit issues. • Blending retail knowledge and operation to drive business results while building a high performing team
Employee Supervision, Staffing and Training (20%) • Hiring and training of staff and volunteers, visitorship demands, events, seasonal peaks. • Strive to hire a diverse set of employees that meet Arboretum DEI goals • Ensures that employee are working as expected and hours governed by collective bargaining agreements and employee groups administrative rules • Supervise and motivates staff, cashiering functions and provide customer service training; receiving inventory, merchandise displays, presentation of store, customer service, point of sale system, internal store, CFANS and University policies and procedures • Train and monitor customer service by provide training and coaching as needed • Complete or supervise all store opening and closing procedures on a daily basis; effective daily closeout process of cash registers and prepare daily deposits • Implement policies and procedures for store staff • Special events or satellite stores; schedule staff, store layout/equipment/inventory, coordinate all aspects of operations • Direct staff in the performance of day to day operation expectations • Plan and problem solve with staff and customers • Coach, develop and guide staff as required. Sales and Revenue Management (15%) • Prepare purchase orders and approve invoice for payment • Calculate profit/loss, and all other financial records needed for accountability and evaluation on sales on a weekly, monthly and annual basis • Analyze inventory performance which includes on-line, satellite, mail orders, phone and in person sales • Analyze and monitor product by placement, receipt of goods with timing, pricing, growth, and collaborations with other units. • Budget management and forecasting which includes the cost of goods expense, supply and salaries expense • Formulating attractive branded advertising and marketing with the store operations; work with other Arboretum units and Public Relations at the Arboretum • Determine discounts to offer to members, various groups, education programs or facility rentals; ensure profitability but maintaining customer loyalty
Customer Service (10%) • Adapt and problem solve with customers • Policy and procedures on customer service • Maintain a good relationship with the Arboretum members and donors • Aware of the ADA and safety standards
BA/BS plus 5 years experience or a combination of related educations and retail work experience to equal at least nine years
Proven experience supervising retail teams
Proven track record on gross retail operations in a non-profit setting.
Experience with inventory management
