The Veterinary Specialist 1 position will provide veterinary technical support and assistance in all aspects of animal care to the assigned section(s) of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital or within Veterinary Clinical Sciences. This position provides basic veterinary technical duties as assigned. Assist students and clinicians in all aspects of patient care, including, but not limited to, maintaining daily patient records, recording procedures performed, medications given, and general work-up of patients. Enter patient information and charges into hospital computer system for recording all charges, procedures, and miscellaneous information for client billing and patient records. Assist with ordering, tracking and maintaining supplies of drugs and consumable items.

Small Animal Critical Care
Fully staffed 24/7, the WSU Critical Care unit is a fast growing service. Licensed technicians help to oversee and assist with patient stabilization and treatments. This team of outstanding professionals provide compassionate care at the highest level using the latest tools, medicines, and techniques. This position will handle critically ill and emergent patients with round the clock observation and therapy. Technician duties include peripheral line placement, canine and feline urinary catheter placement, pain assessment, administering constant rate infusions, monitoring vitals including direct and indirect blood pressure, and patient advocacy.
This position will work closely with clients and their pets to assist the veterinarians in performing radiation and chemotherapy treatments, including follow up care. Successful candidates will demonstrate attentiveness to the position responsibilities, an active communication style, be an effective patient advocate. Organizational skills and established all-around technical skills are vital to the duties of this position, particularly atraumatic intubation and intravenous catheter placement.
This position provides the widest variety of support in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Members of this team may be asked to work in any one of the services areas throughout the hospital on any given day. Previous experience with dogs, cats, pocket pets, birds and small wildlife is helpful for the float position. This position will train in and assist all departments across the hospital, which necessitates flexibility. Float techs will also be assisting our Certified Canine Rehab Practitioner with underwater treadmill therapy, therapeutic exercise, and low light laser therapy.
This position will work under the guidance of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital's clinical anesthesiologists to coordinate patient anesthesia schedules, check pre-op work ups, administer pre-op and induction medications, intubate and maintain an appropriate level of sedation or anesthesia. This position will also be involved with venous and arterial catheterization, and patient instrumentation as appropriate for the procedure. At this level you will be expected to have the ability to manage up to an ASA 2 level case with minimal support. Managing these cases means you will be working in conjunction with clinicians and students to handle technical problems related to the delivery of anesthesia to patients which may include but is not limited to addressing inappropriate anesthetic depths, changes to cardiovascular status, recognizing cardiac arrhythmias, and trouble-shooting monitor or equipment issues. There will also be some clinical teaching and mentoring to the fourth year veterinary students as it relates to specific case management. This position will work with both large and small animal patients and therefore must have experience with both. This position will oversee and be expected to complete medical records to maintain patient data essential for accurate anesthesia records as well as insure proper charge capture. This position will also be trained to offer various analgesic options for patient care. There may be occasional on-call responsibilities. There are currently four (4) positions available; 2 day shift, 1 swing shift and 1 overnight shift.
The position will work equally between Community Practice and Exotics. . Community Practice serves as a model of the private practice industry for our veterinary students. This service provides both wellness care and treatment for minor injuries of dogs and cats. Community Practice duties include providing clinical expertise in canine and feline venipuncture, peripheral IV catheter placement, and animal restraint, inducing and monitoring animals under anesthesia, performing dental radiographs, routine dentistry, and assisting in some oral surgeries among other tasks. The Exotics service sees animals ranging from small field mice up to an occasional wallaby and everything in between. This service sees both client owned animals as well as wildlife animals. Responsibilities will entail patient treatments and husbandry, assisting in anesthesia and surgery, obtaining diagnostic samples and educating clients under the direction of the veterinarians. Successful candidates will have safe handling skills, flexible attitude and a calm demeanor when working with patients.
Clinical Instructional Services-DVM Teaching Program
This position provides skilled veterinary technician support and organizes live and cadaver animal instructional laboratories within the Veterinary Clinical Sciences professional degree program. Duties include teaching veterinary students in laboratory and surgical environments. Skilled veterinary technician duties include providing pre- and post-op care such as physical examinations, diagnostic procedures, anesthesia induction, surgery, recovery and discharge. This position will be called on to administer injections and medication, draw blood, collect specimens and monitor vital signs of animals under the care of teaching animal protocols, while demonstrating and teaching students proper methods. This position may lead hourly employees and will assist with the organization, set-up and tear-down of teaching program labs.
This technician will be part of the Equine Team at Washington State University's Veterinary Teaching hospital, which encompasses equine orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, and theriogenology. The individual in this position must demonstrate strong horsemanship skills, abilities, and mindfulness. This technician must demonstrate both horsemanship and the technical skills required by all licensed veterinary technicians at WSU, as well as demonstrated knowledge of horse handling, behavior, and restraint for adult and juvenile horses. The position emphasis is on horse handling skills and awareness in order to provide a safe working environment for the clinicians, colleagues, and students in the Equine section at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
Associate Degree from an accredited school of animal technology; or registration, certification or licensure in an animal or veterinary technician field and one year experience with the care and treatment of animals in a veterinary practice; or equivalent education/experience.
Must meet the required criteria (WAC 246-935-060) to be eligible to sit for the Washington State veterinary technician exam and must pass the exam the first time it is available.
Must pass WSU radiation safety training exam first time it is available.
Preference given to applicants with experience in clinical laboratory and surgery; anesthesia; catheter placement; and radiology/imaging protocols and modalities.
