The College of Agriculture and Environmental Design seeks a dynamic leader and scholar to serve as the next chair of The Department of Animal Sciences. The Chair shall provide innovative leadership to build upon the excellent research and educational activities within the department. The primary responsibilities of the position include: academic leadership; fund raising; enhancement of relations with alumni, government and industrial partners; student recruitment, retention, enrollment growth, curriculum planning and administrative oversight and direction. The Chairperson reports directly to the Dean, the chief administrative officer for the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The applicant should possess outstanding administrative abilities and a strong record of professional accomplishments in teaching, research or cooperative extension, and public service. In addition, the candidate should possess effective interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate must have an appreciation of the land-grant philosophy.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The Department of Animal Sciences is housed in a 64,000 square foot, 2 story facility. It accommodates modern instructional classrooms, teaching laboratories and faculty research laboratories. The first floor includes a 12,000 square foot environmentally controlled laboratory animal resource unit. Bachelor of Science Degrees are offered in Animal Science, Animal Science (Animal Industry concentration), and Laboratory Animal Science, in addition to The Master of Science Degree in Agricultural and Environmental Systems with a concentration in Integrated Animal Health Systems. The department is supported by beef, poultry, swine, dairy, small ruminants, equine teaching and research facilities. These extended laboratory opportunities, located as part of the University's fam complex, help to further enhance research capabilities and practical demonstrations for agricultural activities. The department consists of 7 faculty members; 410 undergraduate students and 12 graduate students. The Department of Animal Sciences produces the second highest number of African Americans that go on to pursue the D.V.M in the United States. The department also has one the highest student first-year retention rates on campus, displaying the importance placed upon student success. NC A&T State University is a public, comprehensive, land-grant university committed to fulfilling its fundamental purposes through exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, scholarly and creative research, and effective public service. The university offers degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral levels with emphasis on engineering, agriculture, biological science, technology, literature and other academic areas. Qualifications include PhD or equivalent terminal degree. Applicant must have a minimum of six years of demonstrated excellence in teaching and creative/research activities consistent with eligibility for appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor and some administrative experience relevant to the position. We are looking for a service-oriented individual with excellent people skills and the ability to motivate faculty and staff toward shared goals.
This is a tenure-track position at the Associate or Full Professor level. To be considered, the candidate must have earned a Ph.D or DVM+MS in animal science or a closely related field. The ideal candidate is a service-oriented individual with experience in academic administration, teaching and research as well as excellent people skills and the ability to motivate faculty, staff, and students toward shared goals. Training and experience in reproductive physiology of food animals is also a plus.
