The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry's PreClinical Program is searching for dentists interested in participating in the education of student dentists part-time (primarily 10-40% time) during their first two years of dental school. During this formative time, student dentists learn basic to complex restorative procedures in preparation for patient care. Courses include prosthodontics (dentures, partials, crowns, bridges, and implants) and operative dentistry (courses I,II,III). Dentists participating as preclinical adjunct faculty do not have patient care responsibilities.
The availability of preclinical adjunct faculty positions depends on semester needs and applicant availability. For example, during spring semester, preclinical adjunct faculty will guide the first-year students through their education in single crown preparation, and the second-year dental students through their first exposure to dental implants. In the fall, the first years learn about oral anatomy (including the waxing of crowns), while the second-year students take separate courses on fixed partial dentures and complete dentures.
Course directors provide guidance and training to adjunct faculty to maximize the effectiveness of teaching. A professional and collegial relationship is maintained with students, faculty and staff. Many of the current adjunct faculty have been teaching in the preclinical setting for years and find it very rewarding. Some faculty are retired from practice and others maintain active practice.
For each discipline adjunct responsibilities include: attending student lectures to assist in understanding the course and teaching strategies, understanding the syllabus and related materials, teaching and supervising students in the preclinical laboratory and grading/evaluating students.
