This position will support a research team at the Institute for Translational Research in Children’s Mental Health (ITR) at the University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development. ITR is involved in cutting edge mobile health technology research, including the study and development of wearables and apps to prevent and/or intervene in mental health and substance use disorders with children and parents. The research team participates in all aspects of the design and analysis studies, ranging from the development of interactive applications for enrolling, engaging, and assessing study participants to the development, distribution, and maintenance of the developed software.
This is an opportunity to work in a challenging and rewarding research area that constantly poses new technical and computational problems. The Junior Full Stack software developer will focus on data collection and visualization tools. The incumbent in this role will help enhance, develop, and maintain web-based visualization and interactive tools that (a) help researchers leverage mobile and wearable devices to collect data on research participants, understand complex research results, and execute challenging analyses and (b) help research subjects share information about their health and understand how the information they contribute is being used.
Application Development (75%)
Work within a team of researchers, developers, and designers to integrate wearable sensors APIs and server-side infrastructure with responsive web mobile applications and analytics tools
Use FitBit API and SDK to connecting web applications to wearable sensors
Maintain the server-side account management and data infrastructure and assist in constructing datasets for research purposes
Documentation & Reports (15%)
Track and document all products developed, including software, code and experiments
Help prepare technical reports
Help prepare research publications
Technical Support (10%)
Monitor and address user and back-end challenges during iterative beta testing
Monitor and address user and back-end challenges throughout study deployment
Provide timely support to research team, and be responsive to communications throughout the research process
Attend weekly meetings and as needed to troubleshoot software or hardware challenges
BA/BS degree in Computer Science/Informatics or related technical discipline and two years of work experience in the areas of application/web/systems development or four years or work experience with non-related BA/BS degree
Knowledge of server-side architecture and related back-end technologies (SQL and AWS experience preferred)
Demonstrated/documented strong communication skills.
1-2 years of experience developing full-stack applications, including creating responsive web applications for mobile deployment and server-side account management
Experience working in a professional setting with user researchers and user experience designers
Experience with the FitBit OS or similar SDKs
Experience integrating server-side infrastructure with study management software, e.g., REDCap
Experience with HIPAA-compliant backend design
Experience with data analysis and statistics using R
