The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education and Human Development, University of Minnesota, invites nominations and applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Elementary Mathematics Education. This person will provide dedicated leadership in racial justice-focused elementary mathematics education in our STEM Education program (75%) and our Elementary Education program (25%).
Our vibrant team of faculty and graduate students in STEM Education and in Elementary Education are interested in researching and teaching political and social ideas, issues, and concerns as they take shape in the curriculum, contexts, and pedagogies of elementary mathematics education. A central priority of our department is to recruit and retain teacher candidates and graduate students of color and prepare them for teaching and research that challenges systems and structures of racism and oppression in elementary mathematics. The successful candidate will therefore have demonstrated passion for racial-justice oriented elementary mathematics education research, teaching, and/or service.
The successful candidate will work closely with our program for Elementary Education undergraduate majors (approximately 200 students at any given time), Elementary Education M.Ed. Initial Licensure Program students, and STEM Education PhD students. The hire will intentionally and systematically design learning experiences (e.g., in elementary teaching methods courses and research/theory courses) and research opportunities oriented toward justice in education.
This is a full-time, 9-month, position in a highly regarded college of a major urban research university. The position will be tenure-track at the Assistant Professor level and tenured at the Associate Professor level. Appointment Details: The individual hired will be appointed to a fullâtime, 9âmonth, annuallyârenewable position as an Assistant or Associate Professor in Elementary Mathematics Education. This position will begin with the 2020â2021 academic year, with a start date of August 31, 2020. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Articulate and implement a strong research agenda pertinent to Mathematics Education as it relates to teaching, while maintaining a commitment to seeking external funds to support scholarly inquiry. It is expected that the candidate will develop a strong record of publication.
Teaching and Advising (40%)
Contribute to the teaching and advising of graduate students (teachers in training, practicing teachers, M.A., M.Ed. and Ph.D. students) in the Mathematics Education Program area—with a particular focus on Elementary Education. The individual will be expected to teach four courses per academic year with possible summer teaching opportunities available.
Make strong contributions to the ongoing activities of the Mathematics Education Program, the Department, the College, and the University. Participate in community service and/or other outreach and public engagement activities and in the activities of relevant professional organizations.
Earned doctorate degree in Mathematics Education, Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a similar field. Doctorate must be completed by August 1, 2020. There must be a minimum of 18 graduate-level credits in mathematics or STEM education or mathematics (Content).
Current K-6 license in elementary education or the equivalent out of state license with elementary scope.
At least 3 years as a teacher of record in an elementary classroom. Candidates must provide evidence that, in their role as an elementary teacher of record, they were responsible for teaching mathematics.
Evidence of an explicit commitment to equity, access, and diversity matters related to markers of difference including, but not limited to race, social class, gender, language, and sexuality.
Evidence of the capacity to be a flexible, situational, and visionary leader who effectively leads and collaborates with others.
For Assistant Professors, evidence of an emerging research agenda in elementary mathematics education.
For Associate Professors, evidence of a robust research agenda in elementary mathematics education and success in securing research funding.
For Associate Professors, evidence of effective advising.
Ability to coordinate and manage Elementary math methods courses and program.
Potential to recruit students from underrepresented groups in licensure and STEM PhD programs.
Evidence of teacher education mathematics leadership in an elementary setting (e.g., curriculum specialist, lead mathematics teacher, teacher mentor, leadership in professional learning communities.
Demonstrated engagement in racially diverse communities, schools, or educational non-profits, having service with and among under-represented groups.
Experience teaching mathematics methods at the elementary or early childhood level.
Experience with supervision of student teachers.
Experience with the integration of technology in teaching.
