Research Support - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The primary purpose of this position is to oversee and perform daily husbandry care of animals housed in the Animal Care Facility, including maintenance and care of the facility and equipment, in compliance with all federal, state, and university regulations regarding the care and use of animals in research, teaching, and testing.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides daily husbandry care for animals housed in the Animal Care Facility (ACF), including the following:
Provides food, water, and enrichment daily.
Completes daily health status observations and administers basic medical treatments and procedures as needed.
Performs cage changes, including cleaning and sanitizing animal housing enclosures, equipment, and rooms.
Maintains records documenting all activities listed above and ensuring completion of said activities.
Provides training and guidance to research and animal care staff and students, including:
Facilitates training and orientation for all new ACF users.
Provides training for animal procedures as needed.
Provides re-training to any ACF users as needed.
Coordinates receipt and shipment of all incoming animals, including:
Confirms adequate space requirements to house incoming animals.
Prepares housing and supplies for all incoming animals.
Receives animal deliveries and moving to permanent housing in the ACF.
Maintains records documenting all activities listed above.
Maintains inventory of all facility supplies, including animal husbandry supplies, medical supplies, and all personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, etc.) required in the ACF.
Coordinates daily tasks with student workers, delegating as needed, to ensure completion of all tasks listed above.
Maintains basic knowledge of all active animal protocols in the ACF.
Performs other related job duties as assigned by the Manager of Animal Facilities.
Associate’s Degree from an accredited institution in Biology, Animal Science, Veterinary Technician, or other related field. An Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) Certification and 3-5 years’ experience working directly with rodents in a laboratory or research setting may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Evidence of 1-3 years’ experience working with rodents in a laboratory or research setting required.
Ability to appropriately handle and restrain rodents, particularly mice and rats.
Knowledge of rodent husbandry and health conditions.
Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding animals in research, including USDA, OLAW (Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare), PHS (Public Health Services), and OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) regulations.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills.
Strong attention to detail and able to consistently work accurately and with quality.
Strong decision-making skills, and able to work independently without immediate supervision.
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
Ability to lift at least 50 pounds, move equipment (animal housing racks, cagewash racks, carts, etc.), and bend or squat to observe animals in knee-level cages.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in Biology, Animal Science, Veterinary Technician, or other related field.
Graduation from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technician Program, and licensed by the AAVSB.
