Performs highly skilled work to design, fabricate, maintain and repair advanced equipment and instrumentation with very close tolerances and precision as required for teaching and/or research purposes.
Understands how own and related teams' efforts impact broader functional objectives
Receives work requests from faculty and staff, solicits input concerning general requirements and executes final technical design for lab and field projects
Provides guidance to and finalizes detailed drawings and/or schematics of systems
Proposes improvements to processes and methods as needed
Gathers and analyzes data to identify and solve complex problems that arise with little or no precedent
Impacts the effectiveness of own team and closely related teams
Exchanges advanced technical information and ideas effectively for physical experiments including data acquisition systems and instrumentation.
Uses tact and diplomacy when dealing with own and other teams
Develops working relationships with various internal parties and may work with external parties, as needed
Advises faculty and staff of available equipment and possible alternative designs that might meet their project needs
Install new equipment and work with various manufacturers to provide proper site preparation for new instruments and equipment.
Train and supervise technical staff and graduate students on the use of testing systems and data acquisition (such as: MTS, GCTS, GEOJAC, PERKIN ELMER, AGILENT, HUMBOLDT, TINIUS OLSEN, INSTRON, AUTOCLAVE).
Maintain the reservations in Outlook for testing equipment and work requests.
Conduct and assist students and faculty with research and experiments in all disciplines of the Civil Architectural and Environmental Dept. Design, run and maintain complex testing systems.
In the environmental area work on and maintain Gas Chromatographs with Mass Spectrometers (GCMS,GCFID,GCECD), Thermal Desorbers, Liquid Chromatographs, Auto samplers, Flame atomic absorption spectrometers, Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometers, sterilizers and ovens.
Maintain, run and care for all of the testing machines and the hydraulic systems that support the structures and geotechnical labs.
Run and maintain the controls systems for all of the testing hardware such as MTS actuators, load frames, and shake tables.
Maintain and calibrate equipment and instruments for proper operation and accurate data.
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
2 year ASEE Degree desirable.
5 years experience preferred.
