UMD Swenson College of Science and Engineering is recruiting a McKnight Foundation sponsored Postdoctoral Researcher interested in teaching physics and materials courses along with strong interest in research on polymer/composite materials degradation and service lifetime prediction. The position is for two years. Review of applications will start 9/23/19 and continue until filled.
The post-doctoral research associate will include the development of experimental methods informed by multi-scale simulations to develop predictive computational models and measurement techniques to discern degradation of composites with the focus based on experience and interests. The work will be designed to integrate the research pieces presently underway involving undergraduate and graduate students, allowing ample opportunity to mentor. The work will include understanding of the polymer composite chemical makeup along with the impact of manufacture of specimens on service properties learned by doing the manufacturing of the composite. Included in this work will be investigations of various depths of microscopic characterization (TEM/SEM/XRD/etc.) and macroscopic characterization (mechanical/electrical/diffusion/thermal/ porosity/etc.). This will include testing at University of Minnesota Twin Cities as a means to broaden the testing regime, learn new techniques, and practice in developing a test plan.
Minimum Qualifications: • A completed Ph.D. in engineering or physics or closely related topic • Ability to teach concepts of material science to students coming from diverse disciplines of science and engineering • Develop and teach material science and/or engineering physics laboratories • Experience in materials characterization tools
Preferred Qualifications: • Experience teaching students in a variety of disciplines such as chemistry, physics, and all the engineering fields • Interest in online teaching • Strong publication record • Industrial or academic experience in a variety of science and engineering
