Summary of Position: The Bazurto laboratory in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at the University of Minnesota is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research scientist. We use a combination of traditional microbiology, molecular biology and omics approaches to study the physiological response of Methylobacterium extorquens to toxic metabolites. Previous work has focused on formaldehyde, an obligate intermediate of methanol utilization and a potent toxin, to identify metabolic strategies of formaldehyde resistance. We are interested in querying their implications in the organism’s native environment (plant leaves). Successful candidates will have a PhD in Microbiology, Plant Pathology/Microbiology or related fields and have a strong background in microbial physiology and plant-microbe interactions. Experience with bioinformatics and statistical analysis will be beneficial, given the interdisciplinary nature of the work. Additionally, the postdoctoral fellow will receive mentoring in proposal development, grant writing, and scientific communication as well as have the opportunity to present their results at conferences.
Essential and Other Functions: 80% Independent research Design and implement experiments, creatively and efficiently, to achieve the predetermined research goal. Collect, record, analyze, and graphically display data. Remain current on scientific literature and techniques. Adhere to lab guidelines on record keeping as well as data conservation and sharing.
10% Training junior scientists Participate in mentoring more junior scientists (eg, undergraduate students, graduate students, technicians). Teach students to conduct independent research and provide expertise as needed to increase the efficiency of lab.
10% Communication of research activities Comprehensively summarize methodologies and results in group and one-on-one meetings in a timely and audience-appropriate manner. Prepare high-quality manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. Assist in proposal and grant preparation. Present research results at internal seminars and relevant national/international scientific conferences.
