TRIO Upward Bound is seeking educators to instruct two supplemental courses for our afterschool, college preparation program targeting high school age students from Minneapolis. We are looking for instructors for the following two courses:
English Composition for 10th grade students. This class meets every Thursday. Instructor must be available from 3:00-6:00pm each Thursday for the entire academic year in addition to office prep hours on campus with TA.
ACT Prep & Career Exploration for 11th grade students. This class meets every Tuesday. Instructor must be available from 3:00-6:00pm each Tuesday for the entire academic year in addition to office prep hours on campus with TA.
Revise and/or create curriculum in high school level English Composition course
Revise and/or create curriculum in high school level ACT Prep and Career Exploration course
Prepare weekly lesson plans and teach in a classroom one day a week at the University of Minnesota each Tuesday and/or Thursday evening during the Minneapolis School District calendar year
Monitor attendance, document student performance and complete student evaluations as required by TRIO Upward Bound
Assess student learning and inform professional staff of student academic concerns and areas for improvement
Supervise one undergraduate teaching assistant
Attend staff training and occasional staff meetings
Other duties as assigned
Experience w/ direct classroom instruction
Experience working with diverse, multicultural/multilingual and/or urban high school students (can be outside a classroom setting)
Classroom teaching and management experience
Must pass criminal background check
Available for the duration of Minneapolis Public School’s 2019-2020 year calendar, Sept - May
Experience delivering ACT test preparation and/or general test preparation
Experience teaching English including essay writing, sentence structure and grammar mechanics and creative writing
Experience working w/ English Language Learners (ELL)
Experience working with low-income, and/or students who will be the first in their family to attend college (can be outside a classroom setting)
Experience developing and evaluating curriculum
Strong classroom management skills
Experience evaluating student learning and content retention
Experience supervising teaching assistants
Strong communication skills (written and oral)
Willingness and flexibility to fulfill other tasks assigned to further TRIO Upward Bound program goals
Candidates who have overcome and/or experience similar socio-economic backgrounds to the TRIO Upward Bound student population including: low-income, first generation (to go to college) will receive priority consideration.
