Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
This position is available in a laboratory that studies sensory perception and neurovascular coupling in the mammalian brain using high-resolution imaging techniques. The long-term goal of the program is to obtain a comprehensive view of how the brain adapts to change in adulthood, development, and disease. See Karalab.org for more details.
Job Duties: Recognize a diversity of problem solving skills and how they can lead to better solutions
85% Assist in the design of research projects. Perform intracranial surgery in mice. Inject AAVs in mice. Monitor animal vital signs in animal facilities and the laboratory. Prepare and organize instruments for sterile intracranial surgery. Perform perfusions, histology and 3D printing. Responsible for recording experimental protocols, data and keeping detailed records of all experiments and procedures. Keep detailed records of all experiments and procedures in laboratory notebooks and web-based applications. Conduct background literatures research on relevant topics. Participate in weekly lab meetings to report on training progress and discuss research findings.
15% Order animals and supplies for the laboratory. Maintain critical regulatory documentation (e.g., controlled substances, safety, animal care). Ensure that lab supplies are organized and appropriately stocked. Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of some equipment. Transport materials to other buildings, when needed. Prepare for and participate in laboratory inspections that occur throughout the year. Liaison with technical support on general lab equipment, e.g., quotes, repairs/service, refunds. Oversees general lab cleanliness and upkeep.

Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life science and one year of professional experience in a research setting, or a combination of education and experience to equal 5 years. Training and/or experience in microscopy, neuroscience or ophthalmology, small animal surgery, histology and immunohistochemistry. Demonstrated ability to work with a team of colleagues from diverse communities and cultures.
Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with CAD packages such as Autodesk Fusion 360 and 3D printing.
